The Story of the Town’s Woollen Trade 1475 – 1815 by Peter Maunder For more than three centuries, the mid-Devon town of Tiverton was dominated by its woollen cloth trade. This new book charts the history of the trade, from its beginnings at the end of the fifteenth century, right through to its demise in the early nineteenth, covering in detail the people and their stories. After almost twenty years of research, the author brings his own local knowledge, as well as business experience, to bear on hitherto untapped sources, to bring a fresh perspective to the town’s cloth trade. Carefully chosen illustrations enhance the subject, as well as a catalogue of Tiverton cloth seals found in the Netherlands which add an extra layer of understanding to this fascinating history.
