Not a seal, Textile Weight

Not a seal, Textile Weight, Image & Found by Sylvester Canby.
Found in North Yorkshire, 25mm, 14g.

Raised circle border containing a circle of chain links with further chain links crossing it at the top (it may be the other way up). The other side is blank.

This was originally identified by Kowalski of Hungary, "This is a toll bridge token from Hungary. Issued in 1848-49, Budapest, for crossing the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd). Another of these can be seen at Zsetongaléria."

Unfortunately the original correspondence has been lost and the important link no longer works.

Petr Mara has sent me a link to the following research in support of it being a dress weight, ROSSY - Zátěžová olůvka pro závěsy a šaty, "I also wanted to think in this paper about the claim that appeared on the LP and that this type of weight with a number in a chain circle could be a token for the crossing of a chain bridge in Budapest. It was supposed to be only a short period of time at the turn of 1848 to 1849.
At first I searched for all the displayed olives and compared them. I have come to discover that not only chains but also digits are differently designed and implemented by another technique. This does not correspond to the purposeful excavation for such a short period of time. Rather than many years of excavation, perhaps even of different manufacturers who worked for one customer. Because I also read the idea that these bridge tokens spread across Europe with merchants, I learned something about how tokens on the chain bridge in Budapest worked. You had to buy a token on entering the bridge. But at the other end you had to surrender him. It was the first time to control revenue, and secondly, Budapest would have all the chips in a while and nobody would pay. The quantity in which we find and even the use of the trade mark on the special marks can not be a random transfer of the token crossing.
Finally, I've got links from it.

Also from Petr Mara, Sudové plomby, "these are fillings not stamps :) they come predominantly from breweries where they put on barrels with beer ;)
I'd be very interested in your finding! Could you send some photos? I'd be interested in the location. So far I have failed to assign to any brewery the type that was used in it, and this find could help it :)"

The circle chain is likely to be the trademark of J & P Coats, now Coats Group plc. More history here.

From Fotter Rostislav, "on page 55 - AUSTRIA-HUNGARY TOKEN CATALOG, 36. Harlander textile weights. These lead brands are listed in the catalog of Zombori Lajos - Toth Jozsef “Magyar Közlekedesi Barcak” Budapest 2007, on page 23, as brands of the chain bridge. They are sometimes offered as such on the Internet at a high price. They are textile weights that were probably manufactured by the Harlander company in Vienna in 1893 and from Wilhelmsburg / St. Pölten in 1898. Weights are used to weigh down curtains and scarves.

Mail from Professor of numismatics in Vienna Hubert Emmerig -
'... I looked at the pages you mentioned and also what Mr. Heisler and Mr. Thier wrote.
I also believe that this interpretation of lead objects is correct.
Evidence is difficult, of course. I think the strongest arguments are the pieces that have a company name that is known to have operated in this textile industry.
If I see correctly, there are such pieces.
With such companies, tokens are now rather rare. And if they are still made of lead, which is rather unusual for brands that go from hand to hand, then this interpretation seems very plausible and probably .............
You would need catalogs or offers from companies where you could buy such pieces and describe their function ............................ ...
Best regards
Hubert Emmerig ...
